If you want your applications to load faster, I would recommend a SSD. Personally, I would use an SSD for loading applications and a hard drive for files, pics, movies and other space taking items.

That is all budget based, If he is on a budget there is no reason to spend the extra money on the SSD as it will provide no actual performance boost in games and will cost a good bit more to throw in.
