Question is in the title. Should it be real long? The gtx 770 is actually harder to find for under 350 now than before when I bought mine, hopefully this doesn't happen with the 980.

The GTX 980 won't drop in price for a while. A major event, such as AMD releasing it's 3-series cards, is the only thing that could make them drop their price.

Best thing to do is to wait for a holiday sale or something similar.

I'd still recommend it or a GTX 970 over the 290x, however.

I would say,Get an R9 290X Now.It kills the GTX 980 Easily but uses much more Power and runs Hotter.AMD has reduced the prices too.It isn't worth waiting for GTX 980 price drop and also it suffers from VRAM Issues which prevents you even to run Old Games.

The 290x does not beat the 980. The only thing that I could see dropping the 980s price is if the R9 3xx series releases and they beat the 980 out. Other than that I doubt you will see it fall, top tier cards don't drop in price that often

@OP

you hope it doesn't happen but that's what actually happen to nvidia high end cards for each generation. They usually EOL their card much earlier before releasing new series so by the time they come up with the new series they don't have to drop price much to clear their stock. In some cases the price was getting an increase instead of dropping because of lack of stock while there are still demands for it. Take Titan Black for example. The MSRP was 1k but by the end of last year the price jumping to 1.2k to 1.3k range because it was getting harder to get one. The only possible situation where 980 dropping in price is if AMD can come up with something very competitive (or even exceeding) 980 in both performance and price. But I have a hunch that nvidia will counter AMD with new series and 980 will be rebranded into nvidia next series like what happen to 680.
