He can get a cpu for $200? Well what about the costs for the rest of a system? He wants to upgrade his AMD oem system.

The socket is AM3/AM2+, you want to look for a CPU with that socket, maybe AMD Phenom II X4 960T Black. However keep in mind, your mother board may not support the TDP of the CPU. Since you listed a low TDP CPU, of 25W, I would advice you against buying a high power requirement CPU. Your CPU has extremely low TDP, hence there is not a lot of options. The one I selected is 95W TDP. On the side of caution, AMD Phenom II X4 910e (is 65W TDP). TDP is the total amount of heat the process out put, and it is a number to keep in mind because some motherboard may not be stable, if the processor release too much heat. Lastly, buy a after market cooler will definitely help. You can also ask experts on here, if a after market cooler will allow a motherboard to support a higher than specified TDP.

In summary, pick the following:
AMD Phenom II X4 960T Black
AMD Phenom II X4 910e

OEM systems lots of times are not ideal to upgrade much more than ram and hard drives. You can go to the emachines web site and check the cpu compatibility chart. You might be able to upgrade to a used 4 core Athlon II or a Phenom II.

He may have to get a new case if the front panel connectors are proprietary.
