Just built a new rig:
cpu: 4790k
mbo: msi gaming 5
graphic: xfx R9 280x
Ram: 8gb corsair
power: CX600M

Everything works correctly except if i put the GPU in the top 16x slot. It works in the second slot slot at 8x but in the top lane at 16x the is no signal to the monitor.

I have checked the 16x lane with an older GPU and i works fine so i am unsure of the problem. Any thoughts?

Solution
Make sure you're pressing the card down all the way in the 16x slot. The r9 280x requires a lot of pressure. (obviously not too much) And be sure you're wires are connected securely.

Considering an older gpu works, it has to be one of the options above. Let me know how it works.

8x pcie is fast enough, you won't lose over a frame. Also if there is no GPU in first slot then the second slot most likely works at 16x, if you put GPU in both slots then it becomes 8x / 8x, otherwise it is 0x (first slot) / 16x (second slot, the one you use). I'm not 100% sure about that thou. You should contact your vendor if you still have warranty on the motherboard, they should replace it. Don't forget to select best answer. =)

I'm trying to find the reason for this more on principle rather than the small performance drop. As for the slot running at 16x that appears to not be the case as the bios is saying its running at 8x.

I don't believe this is an issue with the motherboard otherwise the older card would not work.

I can't understand how that would happen since the older card works.

You might want to contact MSI.

It's possible there's some weird BIOS glitch.

*If possible, try changing the BIOS video setting from "Auto" to force the top PCIe "x16" slot to be detected and see if that does anything.

You could also try putting BOTH cards in and see if the monitor can be attached to either.

check the connectors on the graphics card's edge - are any of the ones that are towards the rear cracked or shorted or otherwise damaged? the top slot is electrically 16x and the second slot is electrically 8x, so there might be something in those OTHER lanes that is causing the 16x slot to complain (but the 8x doesn't even have the wires to connect, so it doesn't care)

Just checked the connectors on the card and they all seem fine. Had the card in an older machine before in a 16x slot so that would also rule out that possibility.

I am having a problem that sounds just like yours.

My rig:
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z (Also tested with another Crosshair V Formula-Z as well as a Asus M5a99FX Pro V2.0)
CPU: FX-9590 (Also tested with FX-8350)
Ram: Patriot 2400Mhz 16Gb (Also tested with Crucial Balistix 1600Mhz 8Gb)
SSD: Radeon R7 240Gb x 3 in Raid 0 (also tested with WD Green 3Tb HHD and OCZ Agility 3 60Gb SSD)
PSU: Coolmax 1200w 80+ Gold (one with the Yellow Fan and Also tested with a 1100w I barrowed from a friend but don't remember the name)
GPU: Powercolor HD 7970 (Also Tested with 2 different HD 7990s)

So here is what happened. I was using the Powercolor HD 7970 with my old Asus M5a99FX Pro V2.0 board just fine for 1 year in the 1st x16 slot, then I got a HD 7990 and replaced the card. A few weeks later that HD 7990 died (I then returned it for a replacement) so I swapped back in my old HD 7970 but it no longer worked in the 2 x16 slots but only the x4 slots. I got the new HD 7990 in and it worked just fine. in all the slots. Thinking the HD 7990 that had died somehow broke the motherboard I RMA'd it and they sent me a new one but same problem. I then bought a new Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z on sale and tried new ram and cpu as well but no change. I bought a second Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z for another build and had the same problem. I have also tried re-flashing the VBios on the card and trying both Bios (2 VBios on this card w/ switch). And before you say anything about Drivers, I go by what it says in the Bios, not the OS.

So I have officially narrowed it down to the Card itself. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or know how to fix? I want to be able to add the card to a Tri-Fire setup.

Hi, just as I have the same problem ... a month ago I bought on ebay (Ganga) Asus P8Z77-ws, i7-3770, R9 280x XFX.

Q is to put the VC in the first slot 16x, from time to time lose the signal and monitor black screen, and a few seconds I get to hear sound in the game ..

then googling found the solution out there, but nooo short: I move the VC q R9 to the next slot .. and ah been working fine :) but 8x :(

I saw this problem, and as a VC poor amd 5770 and the same thing happened from one moment to another video lost, totally black screen :(, but more curious, I see many cases in this particular VC R9 280x .. . be the problem or incompatibility with AMD .. ??'m looking for ways to make some tests with Nvidia .. there I tell them later happened :)
