The question is simple, which one would perform best? I currently have two (SLI) AMD Radeon 7970 cards but am considering getting a GTX 970, which would be best? Keep in mind I mean both best for gaming as well as recording/editing.

I would be gaming @ no more than 1920x1080 if not less, so don't worry about 4K or such. But I would love to max settings on games, so which would perform best for that?

Solution
If your 7970 Cross fire. is performing well. keep it for an another year. it will be enough for 1080P.

but if you have any issues like heating, screen stuttering or you need more power efficiency you can sure buy GTX970. it is a very good GPU.

As a reply/update to this, I did exactly this and ended up getting a GTX 980TI SC and this thing is godly

It absolutely destroys anything I throw at it, even overkill things like AA on 4K, this thing stays cool and runs godly. The best part is, when I'm not playing any game, its so efficient that the fan doesn't even turn on, it stays at around 42C with the fan at 0% :)

Modern gpu have lots of power saving feature being build in. Any maxwell based card will idle at 135hz. Because such low clock even if the fan not spinning the gpu core is quite cool. Hence board partner thought about to let the fan stop completely when the temperature is low. The good thing about this was the fan life will be prolonged.

Indeed, it's very clever and a great step forward :)

Very excited to see what is coming in the next few years of this technology boom
