This might sound a little bit weird, but would the Alienware X51 R2 motherboard which is the H61 Express Chipset and mini-ITX work with the Gigabyte GTX 970? Also the motherboard isn't in the original X51 case anymore, I put it in the Corsair Air 540. So would I have to buy a different motherboard first or is it okay and also what PSU would be okay with all of this?

Solution
It should work with the motherboard, yes. I'm assuming you already have a graphics card of some sort in there? It should fit into the same PCI-E 2.0 slot that the current card is in.

Although be careful in making sure your power supply is strong enough to support a 970. Can you link your power supply model?

Ok,

So I took a look at the X51 R2 and, wow, that's a very unique design for the gpu alignment. Your power supply can definitely support the 970, your motherboard can definitely support the 970, the last thing is checking if your case can.

Take measurements of how long the gpu can be without hitting anything in your case. If the dimensions listed on the web are within what you measure, you're all set!

Since the X51 R2 is so compressed though, I would recommend purchasing a card with a 2-fan system instead of the 3 fans of the Gigabyte Windforce so that it will fit in your case. This one, for instance, by EVGA is every bit as powerful while being more conservative with space an energy.

Hope that helps!
