ASRock Z87 Pro3 boots to black screen/halts at POST

Every once in a while, my PC only displays 2 lines of POST when starting up, before initializing the drives, and the screen goes black.
Other times there is no POST at all, it just stays black. It can do this several times in a row when resetting. After a random number of resets, Windows boots up normally, or it goes into its repair mode.

While the screen is black, sometimes I can see that the illuminated keyboard lights up the same way when the Windows login screen appears. Other times it can stay unpowered.

I've tried switching display ports, but then the monitor says that the cable is unplugged. Apparently the monitor gets video feed, it's just black.

I suspected that the PSU was at fault, so I replaced it, but the problem persists. I also flashed the BIOS to its latest version.

So my question is; is the motherboard at fault? Can it be a RAM issue, or with my old video card (2008)?

Other parts are:

  • Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz
    Asus GeForce 8800 GS 384MB
    G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 1x8GB DDR3-1600
Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 60GB (boot drive)
    WD Caviar Green 1TB 5400RPM
    WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM

Solution
Take out the Asus GeForce 8800 GS 384MB, use the onboard iGPU to see the PC acts like before or not. If it does not have any problem, the problem is from the old 8800GS.

I got a new video card, and the issue seems to be solved. But due to its erratic behaviour, I can't know for sure. I can still choose this as a valid solution. Thank you!
