My HTPC is a NUC running a I5 cpu and os is WIN 7 and WIN 8 (Alternate boots).

I want to use a touchscreen as a remote solution (10" or so) . Does anyone have any ideas on brand or pricing or faults in my idea. I won't be using wireless HDMI as it doesn't seem ready for prime time yet so I'll be hooked to a 10' HDMI cable. Appreciate any experience anyone may have have with this.

You may want to consider looking at a small tablet with software that can be used for as a remote.
Because these devices are so popular, they have lots of mobile remote control apps for various programs.

This device could also double as a hand held internet viewer while watching videos or listening to music.

I personally just use a Windows Media Center remote for most things. I do have a small keyboard/mouse alternative, but it does not get used too much.

Thanks for the reply nukemaster, I am interested in the touchscreen approach because it gives me a mirror (and interaction) of what's on the TV as well as the full Windows experience; seeing exactly what's on the main screen and ability to control it or switch the TV to a different source (Digi box, other externals etc) while being able to go to the WEB on the handheld (via my NUC and/or watch other sourced material . . I've seen a few 10" touch screens on Amazon et al but have no idea on their true capabilities, longevity and the pickings seem a bit lean in that size. . I ll check out the tablets

If you happen to use calibrations on your system swapping screens sometimes causes a loss of that calibration(friendly warning). Remote access should allow you do do most of the PC stuff from your tablet. It may be a good idea to see how far remote access has come on mobile devices.

I am not advocating tablet vs screen here, just what may be more easy and in the end cost effective. The tablet should be made to tolerate lots of use, while the umbilical(HDMI + USB + Power) of this attached screen as well as the screen it self may not be designed to be used in this way.

If you do go the other route, it would be interesting to see how it goes. I have seen some page tearing when running clone mode(maybe because one screen is not quite in sync with the other), so this is something to watch out for.

I think a built in remove screen would be cool as a part of the room, but that takes away all the flexibility you are looking to get.
