Hi Tom's Community!

I challenged my little bro to make a A in physics. In exchange, I promised him that I would upgrade his processor and help him build his twitch streaming channel. 6 weeks went by, he accomplished my challenge, and now it's time to reward him for a job well done.

He primarily plays League of Legends (Challenger Series Participant), and is working with the following hardware:

axFALts.png

Internet: Verizon FiOS 50/50
Dual Monitor (24 Inches)

Please help me weigh out which one to choose. I've read quite a few posts on this topic already; however, I'm not sure which option to go for. The difference between the two CPUs (socket 1155) is $20 @ microcenter. I want him to be able to stream effectively and chase his e-sports dream.

Should he go with the i7 comparable Xeon, or the more overclocking friendly i5?

Goals:
1080p @ 30 FPS
720P @ 60 FPS

Thank you for your expertise,
Chris

Go for the xeon. I don't think you could get a very stable overclock on that board, and I wouldn't risk trying to. With a total of 8 cores, the xeon should handle all his needs especially if he ever gets into doing CAD work or something else that is super cpu intensive.

Thank you for your response Diox55 and COLgeek.

I had trouble finding whether or not the Xeon was compatible with this motherboard.

Do you have any insight?

PC Part Picker doesn't list it as a choice.

It might not be compatible then.. Let me hop on pcpartpicker and check it out.

What make/model motherboard are you using?

I wanted to stay within the two options because there's a great deal at micro center where:

i5-3570K: $159 with $10 Discount = $149
Xeon E3-1230 V2: $189 with $10 Discount = $179

Do you believe he'll need at least 8 cores to run smoothly?

He doesn't need 8 cores to run smoothly, I would just spend the extra cash for the xeon because it is more cores and will future proof the rig a bit more. I don't know for 100% sure if it'll work on that foxconn board though. If we can't find an answer, go for the 3570k. It'll be a great processor for all his needs.

If he is about to play also on the same rig that streams the i5-3570k is enough. You can of course get the i7-3770k however its more expensive and for the tasks at hand if you were able to overclock the i5-3570 a bit it would be a best price/performance ratio. And keep in mind if you plan on seeling the CPU later on an i5 or i7 will be easier to sell than a Xeon CPU.

Thanks for your advice Centarius!

I don't believe he'll seal and sell.

From what I understand price/performance is important; however when it comes to streaming, there maybe more focus shifted to more cores.

Another Question:

OBS uses a "Quick Sync Feature:" https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-use-quicksync.82/

This feature allocates a lot of the CPU load to the integrated CPU that's built into the i5-3570K.

Does anyone have any input on whether or not this will make a difference in the streaming quality (ease of stream)?

Hey Guys,

I'm gonna go for the Xeon processor. I read some more threads regarding this issue, and people say that the Xeon's HT feature will help streaming.

I'll update once we get everything setup.

Thanks again community!
