Lower than expected performance?

Hey guys, how's it going?

So, recently (November) I built a gaming PC.
I did a lot of research and what I found seemed to be that my parts should run and record most games fairly well. However, I have been finding that I am getting low fps on games when recording, or even when I am not. I am not trying to record Crysis on max settings or anything even close to that. It could just be that I am USING the computer in the wrong way, in which case I feel like an idiot, but I was just hoping for some expert advice.

I am trying to record games such as Mass Effect 1, Dark Souls, Borderlands etc. However, I am finding that I am getting much lower fps (20 and under) than I had expected, despite my system meeting all of the recommended requirements for these games. Either way, any help/input is greatly appreciated!

Here are my specs:-
AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB Vapor-X Video Card
Corsair Builder 750W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Thank you!

I currently use fraps. Though I've tried recorders such as Dxtory and OBS as well, and all three seem to yield similar results.

Did you try using GeForce experience to record? It should use up very minimal performance.

Did you check your bios / diagnostic tools for issues? Make sure no components are overheating and therefor throttling, make sure all RAM is being recognized, etc.

What are you using for storage?

I am using a Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200rpm hard drive. All of the ram is being recognised and everything seems to be running at a fair temperature.

Isn't GeForce Experience only for nVidia cards?

Yes sorry, I did a double take on your GPU. EDIT: Did you try benchmark programs on CPU / GPU?

If you're running any sort of anti-virus/malware or 3rd party firewall/protection software etc, uninstall them or disable them.

Make sure the system has all windows updates, your motherboard drivers installed, and is running the latest radeon catalyst drivers.

Make sure the windows power plan is set to performance mode.

Check what BIOS version is on your motherboard, see if there are any updates with release notes pertaining to stability or performance fixes since the version you have installed.

I tried all of your suggestions and I think it made a small difference, but I can't tell for sure. Either way, thank you for your help!
