I have a Dell PC and an HP laptop. Due to lack of space I would like to physically downsize so that I only have laptop and access to PC harddrive (including programs running on it). Is it as simple as physically removing some hardware in the tower and placing it into something smaller? Or, would simply copying and pasting the "C" drive onto a portable drive transfer all files and programs over? I need to be sure because I have old software and files that I must keep for tax purposes. I can't reinstall the old software onto another drive because I don't have the disks anymore and downloads are not available. That's why I'm wondering if a simple copy and paste would work. I AM A COMPLETE NOVICE so I won't be offended if you use very simplistic language when explaining what I should do :) Thank you in advance for your help - much appreciated

It depends. Most software install's registry files, dll files, and all kinds of other stuff so copying and pasting the "program files\WHATEVER" to a new PC won't work. There are too many dependencies. Now with that said, lots of old software, depending on how old, wasn't that tricky and you could just copy the folder. The best thing you can do is try and see, but no way to know until you do.

Also, you should backup your old desktop then if you can't ever get those programs again. 1 crash and it's all toast.
