Yeah you will need something bigger. The FX chips consume massive power when overclocked and so does the r9 200 series cards. 650w for a single GPU setup and a 850w if you ever intend to buy a second card for...
I guess you meant GTX960 first off. Out of those two cards, the r9 280 has an extra gb of ram, a wider bus that supplies more memory bandwidth, and huge overclocking potential. It is very easy to match the performance of a stock r9 280x with the r9 280 through overclocking. The GTX960 uses less power and is slightly more powerful out of the box. So if you don't ever intend on overclocking the r9 280, the GTX960 may be the better option for you. Well up to 1080p anyways. The extra gb of ram on the r9 280 may also help in the future though, so you should keep that in mind. I personally would say to grab the r9 280 and slightly overclock it. Most hit 1050mhz/1500mhz without changing the voltages, and this can be achieved just by using the catalyst control center.

PS: Keep in mind that the r9 280 is a rebrand of the HD7950. Here is an overclocking guide that should help if you ever decide to overclock the r9 280. Note the performance increase in the benchmarks. It is quite significant. ;) http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/radeon-hd-7950-overclock-guide,1.html

I see the r9 series is better, but will this help me in the future for gaming? as far as upgrades go and fps settings. im not a graphics geek i just want my games to run with no lag

Yes it will help in the future. When games start to get too demanding, you can overclock the r9 280 quite a bit to gain a good amount of extra performance. It also has an extra gb of ram and a wider bus providing more memory bandwidth. I updated my last post with a few extra tidbits, check it out. :p

550w antec silver 80 plus it's arriving in the mail soon

You may need something bigger if you plan to overclock anything. A quality 650w unit is what I would recommend. Seasonic/XFX/Antec/EVGA.
