I do not have the Windows disc

Solution
1. For any used PC, a full wipe and reinstall should be your first action. For your protection as well as theirs.

2. Win 7 64bit will run 32bit programs just fine. What, specifically, do you have that appears to only run in 32bit OS?

What programs? 32bit programs work fine on a 64bit OS. It's only when you start trying to run old 16 bit programs where you run into problems. So if the programs were for Windows 98 or 95 there might be issues. If it ran on XP it will run on 7 x64. You can also try compatibility mode for older programs.

The only way to switch to 32bit is a complete reinstall.

Windows activation is 32 bit or 64 bit agnostic.
You will need to do a clean 32 bit install using a borrowed or downloaded windows 7 dvd.
You should be able to activate using your current activation code.
There should be a coa sticker with the code on it.
Otherwise a free app called "magical jellybean keyfinder" will find it for you.

Sounds like he has a machine from a big OEM. A keyfinder would only find the OEM SLP key. Which you can use for offline activation if you know what your doing, but it wont activate online or over the phone.

I've been trying to install Proteus VX, which worked like a dream on XP, and other music software that worked fine on XP, for DAYS and it crashes on install every time. Also, I've done the right click bit and there's no 'install as 32 bit' option or anything similar. If you've got 32-b it software do NOT bother with Windows 7, it is a complete and utter waste of time, space and processor power. The ONLY stuff that works on 64-bit machines is 64-bit software and you'll have to totally re-buy everything you've ever owned. Stick to XP. Old or not, stuff WORKS on it.
