Is my SSD squealing? Slow start up?

I recently bought and installed a Samsung 500gb 840 Pro Evo SSD in my Win7 64bit rig.

It's been working fine but every now and then, Windows will take around a minute or so (as opposed to the usual 15 secs or so) to start up and just hang on the black "Starting Windows" screen.

It happened about 10 minutes ago and I immediately restarted to try and duplicate the problem. As I did, a pretty horrendous ticking/screeching noise came from my PC but it then started up really quickly that time.

I've only been hearing this noise since I installed the SSD so it's either the SSD or something else like my GFX card or PSU has freaked out coincidentally.

The same sound will happen every now and then during normal operation of programs and what not. I can't figure out if it's the SSD or my PSU or what.

Also, TRIM and AHCI are enabled and this is a couple-week-old install of Win7 with minimal programs etc.

Any idea what could be causing this start up issue?

Fair enough, what about the slow start ups? Sound like a PSU issue?

Hey there, lockjaw!

Make sure you have install the SATA III & chipset drivers, as well as every other essential driver for your motherboard.
You should also consider benchmarking the SSD using a specific utility. I believe Google can help you with that!
Another thing that comes to mind is to check your SSD manufacturer's website for any firmware updates on the drive.

Hope this will improve the speed! Keep me posted! :)

Hey,

Updated and installed all relevant drivers for my mobo after last format/SSD installation. My mobo supports SATA2 as well which I'm fine with. The only downloadable thing I saw on the Samsung site was a pdf manual, doesn't seem to be any drivers.

Will check out some harddrive disgnostic checkers too when I'm at my pc. Any ones you recommend?

Not getting the slow startup problem today, has happened a handful of times, can't figure out if its even the hard drives fault.

There should be a firmware update file somewhere on the SSD's website. Research some more.
As for SSD diagnostics, I'd suggest to take a look at this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1926483/ssd-diagnostic-tools.html
Check if you have any SATA 3 (6Gb/s) ports on the mobo. The SSDs capabilities are limited by the SATA 2 ports (3Gb/s).
Maybe that is causing the slow startup.

Let me know how it goes!

Yeah, this is all I can seem to find on their site. Data migration software and firmware for the 840 (I actually made a typo in the original post, I have an 850 Pro not an 840):

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/pc/support.html

As for the SATA thing, my mobo only supports SATA 2. This isn't affecting the startup, when it starts up normally it's like 15 seconds which is more than enough for me. Just concerned with these times where it sometimes hangs for like a minute.

Try to reset the BIOS and see if that will make the issue go away. ( http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS )
You could also try the sfc /scannow command from Command Prompt and see that it's not some sort of a software issue.
Here's a link that explains all the details of the procedure: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
Check the thread link from my previous post for some SSD test utility. If any errors pop up, you should consider getting in touch with the SSD manufacturer's tech support and RMA-ing it .

Good luck! Keep me posted though! :)
