Current system build, I built sometime in the last 12 months:

i7-4770K (@4.2Ghz - air)
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Mobo
16Gb Kingston Hyper X Fury
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
3x 1Tb Wd Caviar Blue
EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W Gold PSU
XFX Radeon R9 280X Double Dissipation Black Edition
Aerocool GT-S case

I have this hooked up to an Epson TW-5200 Full HD Projector, so gaming res is capped at 1080.

Is it worth upgrading to any of the following cards:

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked 3GB - (AUS$460)
XFX Radeon R9 290X 4GB Double Dissipation Black Edition - (AUS$499)
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4GB (AUS$529)
Galax GeForce GTX 970 Hall Of Fame 4GB (AUS$569)

I was also considering a 980, but costs start at AUS$710 and just go higher ;/
R9 295X2 is also out of budget.

Also open to upgrading my PSU and Xfiring another 280x, although would prefer a single card setup.(AUS$340 for another 280x + AUS$299 for a decent 1000w PSU)

Gaming wise, WoW, D3, Guild Wars 2 the occasional FPS (Crysis 3, Far Cry 4, BF4). Notice FPS drops a lot when playing Guild Wars 2 WvW maps.

The real question is, should I upgrade, or just be happy with what I've got?

Thanks Guys!!

Bumping up to a GTX 970 will get you an additional 25-30% performance boost. The first three games on your list and Far Cry 4 are geared towards Nvidia cards, so there may be some additional benefit on those.

You should upgrade if you're losing frames often. The 970 is your best bet and the MSI is good enough. But if you don't want to spend that much then get the 780. It's not a huge upgrade but it's gonna give you that extra little boost you need.

for 1080p gaming, r9 280x is enough. You won't max out though settings like AA in demanding games. but if you have decided to upgrade i would go with single Gt. 970 for few reasons a)no need to upgrade your psu as 970 is power efficient b)gtx 970 trades blows with 290x but in general a better card
