Problems changing ownership permissions of folder

I just installed an SSD on my computer. I have the old HDD plugged in, which still has the old installation files on it and my old photos etc. When I attempt to access the photos I get this message:

"Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location".

I looked this up and apparently I'm supposed to change the owner of the folder, and subfolders, and change the permissions. The problem is that when I try and change the permissions I get this message:

"An error occurred while applying security information to: E:\randomfilename Access is denied."

I can not figure out what I'm doing wrong. I think it is saying that because it the folder is set to Read Only, but when I try and change it from Read Only to normal setting, the change doesn't take. It says that it has changed the folder setting but once I close and reopen the properties window, it has already gone back to Read Only.

Solution
Your understanding of "Read Only" is flawed. A folder cannot be read-only, that only applies to files. The read-only option, although it's there, is invalid for a folder, as denoted by the solid colour of the read-only check box (instead of a tick).

Try changing permissions just for a folder individually, not including sub-folders.

Do the same in turn with each sub-folder. Takes longer and more mouse clicks but it may work.

I will try that. I have 1.7 terabytes worth of folders though. Surely there has to be a faster way right? I can't figure out why it's not responding
