Hi!

I would like to build a desktop to play Dota 2 in maximum video settings, average 60fps, 1366x768 resolution. What specs will you recommend (processor and graphics card)?

Thanks!

Solution
This is a job for an APU... the 750ti can max out dota2 at 1440p....
If you want a compact system go with an AMD apu like 5800K/6700K/6800K/7700K -> just make sure its an A10 unlocked (K) and go crazy on the ram frequency (minimum 1866 mhz ram ).
Other choice is an pentium g3258 and a cheapo ASRock H81 HDS that can overclock the pentium to at least 4.2Ghz and an nvidia Gt730

First build requires 8GB ram - 2nd build can work on 4gb ram ; Both require minuscule amount of power

However if you can buy used parts - you can build a demented PC for about $250-350 that will be better than anything new you can buy.

Guys, we are talking about Dota2? whats all this 760/960 nonsense? An HD4600 can run the game on max settings... I only play Dota2 these days and i do it on a dead silent dual core amd apu, my main rig is right next to it but since i don't usually play anything else i don't bother turning it on. OP clearly posted " desktop build for dota 2" so where is all this 960 nonsense coming from?!? At 768p even a potato can play dota2...

Thanks for all your answers.

I've got no problem on RAM, I'll choose 4-8GB. For the graphics, I think I'll try the lower GT 730 if you can play it at max rather than going for GTX 960 and 760. For processor, I'll go for pentium g3258. I have no idea on AMD side (I'll try to research their technology). BTW, can you provide a screenshot (net_graph for dota 2) proving it can go average 60FPS together with your specs? Also, can you suggest any application that checks for bottlenecks between the processor and the graphics card?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-x-7IkmoC4 This is at 1080p (3258+730) and it almost handles it - lowering the ress at 1360x768 should make it run at above 60 constantly.

http://www.tipidpc.com/viewreview.php?id=1107 This is at 1366x768 at max settings and the gt 730 is getting 56fps AVG with dips to 42 - this is however limited by the slow celeron dual core at 2.6ghz - your pentium clocked at 4.2ghz should remove this limitation and grant you 60fps.

Also intel is targeting the g3258 specifically for LoL and Dota2:
http://www.technologyx.com/pc-hardware/intels-pentium-g3258-budget-overclockers-dream-big-bust/

So if you plan on playing Dota2 at 1366x768 then go with the g3258 + geforce 730 HOWEVER if you think you'll play at a higher resolution in the future (like 1080p and still want 60 fps at max settings) then go with an r7 260X or if you insist on nvidia then a 750ti, otherwise at 768p the 730 will be enough.

Nice! This is a very cheap build. Thanks for all the info. Currently I'm using a laptop (i7, 16GB, geforce 645m) from my work just to play dota 2 (yeah I need to delete this before they found out), so thanks again. Well supported answer! (y)

BTW, how about the application to check for bottlenecks? Do you have any suggestion that I can use? I want to use it for testing purposes.

I have g3258 + r7 260x oc, monitor res 1366x768. At max settings i am only getting around 45-50 fps and it sometimes fluctuates even to 30-35 for 1-2 seconds. when i turn off some settings like world lightning, atmospheric fog, HQ water and ambient occlusion i am getting 55-60 fps. Am i doing anything wrong? i too was expecting constant 60 fps at max settings on 768 res.
