New Asus X99 Deluxe Motherboard won't post, memory light stays on

Hi Guys,

I've just bought an Asus X99 Deluxe motherboard with a 5960x CPU and a 32GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX (CMK32GX4M4A2666C15) memory kit (4 modules). I cannot get the system to post.

If I install the 4 memory modules into the gray slots (as recommended), when the system boots, the memory light stays on and the bios diagnostic indicator shows a b1 error code.

If I install the memory into the black slots, it beeps a memory error code and shows a 53 error on the bios diagnostic display.

I have tried various configurations including installing just two of the modules into the appropriate slots (as detailed in the user guide). I have also tried mixing the modules but I cannot get it to boot with any combination of them installed.

When the memory light illuminates I have also tried pressing the Memory OK button in each of the configurations above. I can see the system rebooting several times trying different configurations but the same error codes persist i.e. b1 and 53 (depending on which slots the RAM is installed).

I have tried updating the bios to the latest version. I have also tried resetting the bios using the button on the motherboard and have tried removing the battery for 4 hours to see if that would clear any problem.

I'm out of ideas now. Is this likely to be a problem with the memory, the motherboard or perhaps the CPU? I really need this system up and running quickly so some indication as to what might need to be RMA'd would be very useful. I have an RMA on the RAM in progress and will know more about the result of this tomorrow.

If anyone has any idea of what the problem might be or have some more things I could try I would really appreciate the help. I think I've covered everything but there may be something I have missed.

The video card is a GTX 780 which works just fine in my other computer, I've also tried with a GTX 680. The power supply is an Enermax Revolution 1250w which works perfectly with my other computer and should have more than enough power for these components. I have double checked all motherboard settings (i.e. all switches for overclocking are turned off as indicated by no lit LEDs) and have ensured that all appropriate power cables are connected i.e. the main motherboard cable and the auxiliary power cable. I have also tried the motherboard with absolutely nothing else connected and only a video card installed. The problem persists.

Any advice gratefully received,

Many thanks,

Damien

Thanks rolli59, I did try 1 RAM module at a time too (in each of the 8 slots), but unfortunately no change. I have decided to RMA both the RAM and the motherboard and hope it's not the CPU. The CPU error light illuminates briefly (during a check) and then goes out which gives me some hope that it's not the problem.

I agree with you, it's highly unlikely that all 4 RAM chips would be DOA. I have another board and another set of RAM coming tomorrow so at least I'll have two of each to play with before an RMA of one lot!

Thanks for your help, you've pretty much confirmed my suspicions - I've eliminated everything else so it must be a problem with the three new items.

I'll let you know the results.

Cheers,

Damien

Yeah, I'm crossing my fingers that statistic holds true :). It does feel like it's the board, I've never had one that won't post with any memory at all, usually you get something with one of the modules. Anyway a new one has shipped so I guess I'll know more sometime tomorrow.

Well rolli59, you were right, it was the motherboard. Received a new one on Friday and all my memory problems went away and the machine posted without issue.

It's taken me most of the weekend, but I now have it set up nicely running a moderate 4GHZ overclock with the memory on 2666Mhz.

So for now everything appears to be sweet, though through the build I've realised how much things have moved on since I put a complete computer together eight years ago!

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers,

Damien

Just an FYI for everyone out there with code 53 errors. The reasons the board would not POST was not a defective motherboard like Dame1701 claimed. The motherboard he originally had the older BIOS installed and when he received the new board from ASUS it had the newer BIOS preloaded. Had this issue with the same board I purchased at a local retailer. Originally thought it was the memory, tried installing one DIMM into each memory slot with no success. Next tried loosening the CPU cooler with no success. Was about to return the board when I tried updating the BIOS to the most current version via USB flashback. For those of you not familiar with flashback, all you need to do is download the last BIOS at ASUS's website, copy it over to a newly formatted USB drive, and put the USB drive into the BIOS Flashback slot, hold down the update BIOS button for 3 seconds and after about a 2 min installation you will be good to go.

Hope all this helps everyone out there and saves you lots of headaches and time.
