I have a windows 7 x64 PC, with a 500 GB hard disk drive.

I got a new 1 TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-1CH162 SATA Hard Disk some 2-3 months ago.

I created two partitions on it (800 GB + 130 GB) and stored my data in them. It was working very well, and till here no problem.

But, one day I noticed that an important file of mine is not opening, and then I noticed that its size has turned down to 0 KB. That was a shock..! Around that time, it was like whenever I accessed that hard disk, my computer suddenly froze. Icons disappeared, explorer.exe stopped responding, but I could still move the open windows around here and there or open the start menu. After few minutes, computer starts responding again, and I could access contents on disk and again it would hang after few seconds.

Then I searched for all the 0 KB sized (empty) files on that partition, and alas... many of my important as well other non-important files came listed down in the search results. There were videos, pictures, pdf files, text documents, .bin, .xml, .html, .exe files among many others.

I noticed that some selected files were corrupted from some selected folders at random locations in that partition only, not on the other.

Please someone tell me what's going on with my PC.
Is there a method to recover the lost files?

I have copied all the contents of that disk into my older hard disk, to prevent the remaining files from being damaged.
I have run checkdisk and there are no errors.
It's SMART status is OK.

Will full formatting the disk correct the problem?
The hard disk is in warranty, should I get it replaced?

Thank you in advanced !!

Hi there RaghavTheCyberdude,

It seems that your drive may be failing and it is good that you have backed up most of your data. Have you tested the drive with a brand specific testing tool? If not, you can do so. Also, as the drive is still under warranty, it may be a good idea to contact the manufacturer's Support.
Regarding the missing files, I guess you can use some data recovery tool and see whether it will be able to recover them. Just keep in mind not to save any recovered data on the same drive(but on your old one) in order to to overwrite any data. Check this thread out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Thanks for the reply D_Know_WD,

I have tested the drive with the brand specific tool - "SeaTools for windows" and it has passed all the tests available in it.
I have also created a Support Case at Seagate support website and waiting for their reply. [Case No: 04736145]

For the missing files, I forgot to mention that I had already tried that with recuva and pandora, and they show the corrupted files the same way windows explorer does i.e. size 0 KB, and recover them into 0 KB files only.
