Alright guys I hope there is a genius or wizzkid around to help me with the following problem. I've googled my ass of, read dozens of possible fixes, mailed with WD and called with Microsoft for tech support (my tip, never call Microsoft, what a bunch of morons over there....)

I Have a WD Element external HD for some time now. It worked fine on my state of the art Windows 8 computer. After not using the disk for a while I plugged it in and for some reason Windows does not recognise de drive anymore (perhaps it has to do with an update or whatever).

-The ext hdd does not show up under drives in the dev mgr.
-The drive does show up in dev mgr under: other devices, telling me the device does not work because there is no driver installed.
-There are no drivers for this ex hdd because they are embedded in Windows.
-The program driver toolkit is al unable to install a driver.
-I've ran WD data lifeguard, but it does show up there ofcourse.

When I select the device and sort by connection it shows up under:
Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (microsoft)

This is where my mouse and keyboard are also located....so does not seem like a good place for an ext hdd right?:??:

Ive already switch ofxHCI in my bios, but still no effect.

The devices works fine on my girlfriends laptop so the device is fine.

Who can help me sort this out!

System:
Windows 8.1
Gigabyte G1 Sniper B5
WD Elements 2.5 ext HDD 1 TB2

Thank in advanced :)

Thanks for your input.

All updates have been installed

Ive run the SFC. Unsuccesful :(
The SFC notifies me that it was unable to fix allcorrupt files. The logfile consists for about 80% of:

2015-03-14 18:05:03, Info CSI 00006198@2015/3/14:17:05:03.827 Sysprep Warning: Corruption detected. Sysprep Commands will be ignored

OK - just before going any further...Is there a possibility that you have unplugged the drive without unmounting it first in windows ?
If so then THAT is the problem - you will need a data recovery progrm such as recuva or easeus to recover the files on the external drive as they can no longer be "seen" by the computer. ALLWAYS unmount the external drive before unplugging it. Sorry if I am 'barking up the wrong tree' :)

Just another small point. I would download the current free version of Glary Utilities. This is an interesting suite of diagnostic and clean up utilities which also includes the windows diagnostic programsand many "Advanced Tools". This can be helpful as sometimes Glary gives additional options or information. You can do a "one click scan" to clean up nd check everything then go through each individuaal section if you want to be thorough.

Once you re sure tht the computer is in perfect health then you can start to pinpoint the areas where there may be problems.

By the way have you checked the disk in another computer ?

Once you are sure that your computer

Thanks for thinking along, its appreciated

I will download Glary Utils..

The disk works fine on another computer...

I might have unplugged it without unmounting, but I can not recover files on the external drive because I cant access it...

When inserting the disk it installs itself, but windows does not recognise the device as an external storage device.
A recovery program has no use because it will only let me recover files on my SSD inside.....

I noticed this:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductViewerWithDefaultFilters?TempOsid=Windows%208.1&Locale=en-us&Architecture=X64&Type=Hardware&ProductCategory=Storage%20devices&CurrentPage=0&TotalPages=1&ShowCriteria=0&Compatibility=Unknown

Microsoft say "compatible but with limited functionality" ??

External hdds often fail. In the final analysis you can take the actual disk out of the enclosure and insert it into a new USB housing (which are usually made to higher standards) however I have heard that WD is altering the design of their SATA connectors to make it difficult to do this (shooting your customers in the foot...).

I don't think that this link is specific to you but it's interesting to note:
