Only in multitasking! I3 has hyper threading and can handle up to 4 threads at a time and their core can handle much more instructions at a time.

But doesn't the six cores of the fx 6300 beat the i3 that only have 2 cores

Core count is just one variable.
You have to look at efficiency of the architecture.

The heavier 600HP Nissan GTR beats out a 650HP Corvette both in a drag race and in road racing. HP and weight are just two of many variables in this scenario, but based off of those variables alone the vette should have won.

If you don't wanna over clock, get the i3. It will give a better fit in games then the fx 6300. If gaming is not your priority get the fx 6300. A single Intel core is better than what you get on the amd by good margin. And most applications and games don't use more than 2 cores
