Hey guys, first time posting here long time reader. I'm looking into upgrading my HDD and I was checking out WD hard drives, mainly WD green & black as I'm looking for over 1 TB storage. Now I saw that black is for high performance and green is eco-friendly and what types of load each can handle but I'm not sure if I should go for black to be safe, here are my uses for my hard drive:

- Secondary drive
- Holds music/movies/docs and nothing else (nearing 1 TB of data atm)
- When I do access my hard drive however, I am moving large amounts of data on/off it

So should I just go with black since I ask for a lot in short bursts out of my HDD?

Solution
Hi there sevenpioverthree,

WD Black is considered to be a premium product as it is a performance drive with 5 years of limited warranty.
WD Green is designed to be used as a secondary storage and runs cool and quiet.
I think that WD Green will do the job as you need a drive for just storing some data. Though, if you get WD Black you will experience better performance.

Cheers,

Unless you want to shave every watt possible pout of your power consumption go for black, they are high performance 'enthusiast grade' drives for people willing to pay. But if your needs aren't to demanding I would just go for a blue if possible.

Ignore WD's marketing spiel.

Green = 5400 RPM
Blue = 7200 RPM
Black = 7200 RPM with a longer warranty

That's pretty much it. Some of the Green drives have more aggressive head parking (will park the heads after 6 seconds of inactivity) which WD says is OK but many users worry will wear out the r/w head actuator prematurely. There are hacks to disable this behaviour.
