Fluctuating FPS when gaming

Hey guys,

What is happening: I have a gaming laptop that is only 3 months old. However, I noticed during the last few days, my FPS when playing League of Legends has been fluctuating randomly between 30 fps - 60 fps whereas it normally is a constant 60 fps. My CPU usage goes no higher than 25% and Memory no higher than 50% when I game (as I try to minimize background processes).

What I tried: I looked at some threads and downloaded CPUID HWMonitor. During both idle and gaming, the temperature stays at [strike]39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit)[/strike] 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit), so I don't think it is overheating? I have the latest Nvidia driver version 347.52. I've tried Windows Memory Test and MemTest86 and they didn't find anything wrong. What could be the problem and/or what else should I try to test? However, my laptop is still under warranty so I don't want to do something that will make it void.

What my laptop has:

  • ■ ASUS G551JM-DH71-CA
    ■ Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz Quad Core Processor
    ■ 8GB DDR3L Memory
    ■ Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M w/ 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
    ■ 750GB 7,200rpm 2.5" SATA HDD

If you have VSYNC enabled, it will drop to 30 if it can't maintain 60fps. Have you increased any of the graphic settings for the game or are you playing in a different zone that might be harder to render?

Hmm.. I've never changed this since the beginning so I don't think this is the reason. In any case, I checked and it was set to "use 3D application setting" so I explicitly set it to "Off". Unfortunately, my FPS still fluctuates.

I downloaded and ran both. They did find some stuff, nothing big I think but I quarantined all. Unfortunately, it still fluctuates.

Thanks to both for your suggestions.

Any other ideas?

Oh, after rebooting my laptop, it seems the core temperature is actually around 45-47 degrees Celsius (114 F) both during idle and gaming periods. Is this too high? There is only one fan and it seems to be running at 1900 RPM.

Hmm.. interesting.. when I use Hwinfo, it is around 40 degrees Celsius idle, and goes up to a maximum of 62 degrees while gaming. Too high I'm assuming? If so, what should I do to keep it cool? And/Or, should I try and get it replaced since its under warranty?

Those temps are high, but not high enough to throttle games.
In Hwinfo there is an information section about thermal throttling do any of them say yes after gaming. AlsO what are your Gpu temps.

Click start and go to Msconfig,
Go to the startup menu and disable things that you don't deem necessary, like Skype etc etc etc

Oh, hmm...

CPU before: 45 C, during 62 C (max)
GPU before: 40 C, during 60 C (max)
None of my cores has "yes" for thermal throttling

And yes, I don't have many start up apps - only the ones I need.
