So I'm going to start off saying I know very little about this and my wife just asked me to do it for her. I just started researching today and have not really gotten anything setup. So she needs it so she can back up to it on her mac via time travel. I don't really want to format the drive because we already have a lot of stuff on there and so I don't want to move it around, so if formatting can be avoided that be great but in last resort i'll still do it. I've looked online for hours and haven't found any really good tutorials so please help me asap,
thank you in advance,
Henry

Depending on your router, you may get VERY poor performance using a router as a NAS. They just don't have enough CPU power to handle NAS duties. Especially if you refuse to format the disk to the native (EXT3) format. You will be MUCH happier buying low end purpose built NAS hardware from either Synology, Q-NAP or Thecus. If you choose to do this you will have to format the disk.

SmallNetBuilder just did a review of the new low-end Synology single disk NAS -- http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/32638-synology-ds115j-diskstation-reviewed
