This is a stupid question but when I've turned my PC off for the night I will often turn the plugpoint it's connected to off as well, will this cause any damge or is it fine to do this?
No problem. The computer has a small battery which ensures that all the settings are retained in memory. You'd only have a (potential) problem if you left the PC off for months and the battery may run down.

As long as the PC is shut off before that power switch is turned off it won't damage anything in the system. If it's a well made PSU it should tolerate those on/off cycles.
