RAM not showing up properly

About 2 weeks ago I attempted to install a 3rd HD into my DIY PC. After that, the PC would turn on, but not boot. I reseated everything, tested the PSU (everything ok), and eventually got it to boot. It was ton of trial and error but it eventually worked.

Main issue now: I have 4GB of RAM installed but the computer is only recognizing 2GB. I tried moving the stick from each slot and I get the same result each time. If I install a 2GB stick, it reads it as 2GB. These sticks, before my attempt at installing more hardware, were all registering fine. BIOS only registers half the memory of the 4GB sticks as well.

Side note, while messing around with the RAM, noticed that the computer didn't always start up unless I jiggled the main 24 pin ATX power cord going into the motherboard - huh?

Motherboard is a ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo
RAM: 2 x 4GB G.Skill DDR2-800; 2x 2GB G.Skill DDR2-800
Running Windows Pro 64 bit and Elementary OS 0.2.1 64 bit

Any ideas? Would this be a motherboard issue?

I don't really have friends who have home built systems. It's been running fine since I posted this. I double-checked my 24 pin connection from the power supply and think it may not have been plugged in completely. This still doesn't resolve my issue with the RAM. I'm starting to think that it may be my mobo which stinks because I just bought 2 these 2 4GB RAM sticks and they're DDR2. Since most motherboards are now DDR3 or 4 these sticks will be useless if I upgrade boards, right? You can't use DDR2 sticks on a DDR3 board if I'm correct.
