Why do many people on forums (many forums) seem to have delusional information and ideas.

Now I am not saying this forum specifically. In fact I am making thing about another forum where I read someone say something that just is simply wrong. Then I remember a few other forums where people were saying crazy things also.

Basically I realize that if you overcharge a lithium battery at a high rate or overcharge it them it can heat up and rupture and cause a smallish explosion and burn your house down.

But I see on forums many people have totally insane ideas of what is true. I was on one just then and one guy claims that lithium batteries are incendary bombs basically and as dangerous as playing around with a grenade! This guy claims that if you overdischarge (to a low voltage) a lithium battery they will just explode!

But this is simple not true. Lithium batteries will not explode if you draw from them until they are even dead flat.

Now with the Lithium ones they use in RC things if you discharge them as a ridiculous rate there have been cases of ones catching on fire. But simple discharging a lithium battery at a sensible rate down below what is considered normal (3.7V) they will not explode. All you will do is reduce their life span.

It seems people on the net like the just make up random crap about anything. Nothing about the batteries chemistry or anything suggests anything towards explosions simply happening when a low voltage is reached. This is seriously retarded.

Then on another forum it wasn't quite as retarded but still pretty bad. They claimed if you throw a D cell battery in a fire and you are in the vicinity of the fire it will kill you! 0_o.

Then another person claimed that car batteries release toxic sulfuric gas! Again this simply isn't true. In overcharging of a car battery electrolysis occurs and H20 splits into oxygen and hydrogen gas and escapes. Not such (sulfuric acid gas occurs).

Wonder what the people on here think. I realize when making a thread like this it opens me to trolls that will likely try to claim these people are correct. lol. Hope that isn't all though.

It's a sad fact that many people just tend to exaggerate topics that they've come across previously. For example:

Person A: My laptop battery gets warm after an hour of use. Is this normal?
Person B: I heard someone's laptop battery got hot after just a little use.
Person C: I heard someone's laptop battery got hot in just a minute or so.
Person D: I heard someone's laptop battery caught fire after using it for a while
Person E: I heard someone's laptop battery exploded into a ball of flame after just turning it on.
Person F: I heard someone's laptop exploded when they turned it on.
Person G: I heard someone's laptop exploded for no reason. They need to recall these things or I'm suing!

As you can see, a minor exaggeration or misinterpreted idea can lead people to some very strange "facts".
