My burner has been working fine up until last night. I went to burn an .iso to a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc, but the drive won't even recognize it's in there. I put them in another drive and they loaded up, so I know it's not the discs. Regular DVD-R discs were working on it, but now even they won't read. I've uninstalled the drive and let windows automatically reinstall the firmware, tried manually flashing different versions of iHAS 224 firmwares as well as compatible versions of different models (the 424 and 624), all to no avail. Not really sure if there's anything I can do to avoid buying a new one

If I had to guess, I'd guess that the drive itself is broken and you will have to replace it to get reliable reads and writes. You've already done all the sensible software things.
