My daughters Toshiba Satellite won't connect to the internet. It seems to have a problem with the Network Adapter, but when I troubleshoot it, it tries to use Windows Update, which of course won't work because it's not connected to the internet. I have plugged the ethernet cable in but it doesn't seem to recognise it. I've restarted both the router and the laptop.

A couple of days ago it kept crashing. Daughters friend looked at it and said the original antivirus had switched off (Symantec) because it was out of date, so it's been running without antivirus. He ran some kind of antivirus and found a trojan, got rid of that, then tried to take Symantec off but had to do it via the registry? Anyway the computer is back and running but we need to put antivirus on, was going to put AVAST on. But can't, obviously.

'Friend' is no help for this, and I don't know what he did.

I'm not at all computer-savvy but have decent commonsense and can follow instructions so please answer in plain English!

Does device manager show a problem with your network adapters? Try uninstalling the device if it shows an issue and reboot so that windows recognizes and reinstalls the generic drivers. Go to Toshiba and d/l the latest drivers for your controller to a thumb drive and install them on the Toshiba.
