I am currently using a D-Link DNS-320L NAS.

However, I feel quite restricted with it's OS and also it's getting quite full now (almost 4TB) with a 1TB HDD attached to it via USB.

I have decided to build my own D.I.Y build.
My build must be focused on LOW power consumption as this will be on 24/7 and must be able to handle more than 4 HDD's (maybe even by using a PCI SATA controller card).
The mainboard doesnt have to be RAID based as i am going to use software RAID (FreeNAS or NAS4FREE).
The case must be Mini-ITX compatible as those are low power consumption boards and must also be able to accomodate upto 6 HDD's or more.
I plan to run the OS from a USB Flash Drive therefore an SSD is not needed.

I am from Malta, Europe so the parts can only be bought from a European store due to duty taxes here. I am currently browsing components from www.computeruniverse.net & www.overclockers.co.uk

Here is what I have come up with so far:

Mainboard: ASRock C70M1 (it has a built-in CPU)
RAM: Corsair ValueSelect DDR3 8GB
PSU: be quiet! System Power S7 300W
HDD's: 2xHitachi IDK Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SE(4tb in total which i will run in RAID1)
Case: Fractal Design Node 304 (it can hold upto 6 drives)
Flash: Transcend 8Gb Jetflash 500 TS8GJF500

I can get all these from www.computeruniverse.net including shipping to Malta and Paypal charges for the price of €570.

Please let me know what you think, what i could/should change and what i should definately go for.
N.B: My budget cannot exceed €600.

I look forward to your feedback :)

If you don't plan to add a large number of drives, that setup should suffice within your budget. Any other integrated solutions with, say, an Intel Avoton CPU would far exceed your budget.

If it will be heavily used, you plan to expand it later and the I/O load will be high, you may need to look at a beefier solution. But for light to moderate storage usage and physical disks, that's a decent build you've got. For comparison's sake, see what you could get the WD Red NAS drives for in your region, those are specifically designed for NAS use.

Good luck :)
