Sorry, Karsten75. I edited my question a bit to refer to the front panel I/O ports specifically. I'm not sure if that was obvious in my original phrasing.

I disassembled my chassis a bit and took a look and there are two problems with replacing the front panel I/O ports with a different device:
1. The biggest problem is that the new device needs to be much less tall than a typical 5.25" optical drive. It can only be a little over half as high - except for the last inch that's visible on the outside of the case, which can be full height. This rules out almost all 5.25" devices I could find, especially the ones in the shape of a rectangular box. Perhaps some devices, with exposed PCBs, could fit.
2. The mounting of the front panel I/O port is a bit strange. I think you need some kind of flanges on each side that can be screwed to the front of the case.

So I'd have to give my own question an answer of No, unless there are some hard-to-find devices with a similar shape or you are some kind of wizard with a dremel. (I'm an idiot at modding.)

Too bad, I was hoping to get a SD/SDHC card slot in my I/O panel.
