i recently built a new pc and i bought a corsair 600m and asus 290. The gpu came with a 8 pin to to 2x 6 pins (on the gpu is a 6 pin and 8 pin connector) but i didn't have enough cables from my psu to use this so instead i just used a 6 pin cable and a 6 pin+ 2 pin for the gpu

could this be the reason for the bsod's?

That PSU will support the 290 just fine unless there's a very large power draw from the rest of your system. Please list all your components.

Off the top - Have you seen any consistency in when then blue screens occur? What is the BSOD error message?

originally i was getting the message 0xA0000001 but then after deleting and updating my gpu drivers i got bsod 116
