Hey,

I'm postponing purchase of new rig for another year until DDR4 and DX12 become more standard, so I decided to upgrade my old PC.

Got a cheap GTX580, pinned max RAM (8gig), got Hyper 212(very silent) and now I'm left with Athlon 64 X2 4000+ CPU.
MB is Asus M2n68-AM Plus, and it can house up to 95W AM3. Terrible at overclocking - there are +3% + 5% + 7% profiles. I tired my hand at manually boosting that Athlon to 3GHz, but it's very unstable, and most of the time can't even boot. Even at much lower clocks. Could be my fault thou - I'm noob at overclocking :)

So, what should I get instead? 1065T is the fastest that could fit, but it's so rare and costs +$200.
1045T is half the price, but do I really need 6 cores?

I'm using is mostly for Photoshop, gaming and surfing the net. And in Photoshop, rarely am I kept waiting while CPU is doing something. It's mostly a whole bunch of shapes and layers (up to 100) composing web design.
As for Gaming - I'm not trying to set new benchmark records. As long as it's smooth, I'm good.

I've been looking at 960T, but I doubt I can unlock those 2 locked cores with my MOBO. Still, it has higher clock than 1045T, (3.0 vs 2.7). Both have 6MB L3 Cache. How important is that?

Basically, I need an AMD expert to tell me what is the best 95W AM3 CPU for the buck.
No need to spend $100 on X6 if I won't be using it, and I could get better performance, out of higher clock X4 for less $. Or perhaps X6 is the way to go - I'm no expert :)

Thank you!

You should go with the X6. I mean a lot of people are going to say go X4 but in the long term the X6 is best because more and more games are focussing on multicore performance since the next gen consoles are running 8 core processors. Not only that but with photoshop the extra 2 cores could really help,. Get the 1065t. then oc the hell out of it

Currently, for gaming, clock speed is typically the number you want to pay attention to as it has more of an impact on performance than number of cores, unless you're playing games optimized to take advantage of multi-threading.

That being said, if your cost differential between a 4 and 6 core isn't overly significant, you might as well invest in the 6 core chip. More and more apps and games are being designed to take advantage of multi-threading, so why not :)

Uhuh, the next gen consoles are 8 core so games are going to be more and more geared towards higher core gaming.

I forgot to mention: I'm not from US, so ebay is the way to go. And as it seems, everyone votes for more cores over higher clock.

Second hand for sure! I've been all over ebay and amazone.de this past month, so I know the prices. 1055T is great, but it's not officially supported by my MOBO, even thou it's 95W. However, here it says 95W 1055T would work.

So it's X6 for sure... only should I play it safe with 1045T, or go for 95W 1055T and hope it would work? Anyone knows what would happen to "unsupported" CPU anyway?

The 1100T was made almost a year after amd's first 6 core, so it probably won't be exactly the same. It's an old computer I gave my x6 away about 2 years ago, and my advice is to save as much money for your next build.
