If it's wireless do this

With the disk in your computer:
Go to control panel
View devices and printers
Find at the bottom, either an unidentified device or Xbox 360 controller for windows ( this is the adaptor not the controller, the picture is a white box not the Xbox controller)
Right click, then click properties, go to hardware tab then click properties again
Click change settings and go to driver tab.
Click update driver
Click browse my computer for driver software
Click let me pick from a list of driver devices on my computer
Click have disk and type D:\ where is is already highlighted ( mine sais A:\ before changed )
Then find the driver on the disk
Click next and it should install.

I did that I have the receiver installed and the controller installed when I go to the devices and printers and right click on the xbox 360 controller and go to the game controller settings and test the controller all of the buttons and the axis works but when i start a game i can press the buttons to get the the main screen but when it comes time to press start to play nothing works. if i use the keyboard it will register as mouse and keyboard and then if i press a button on the controller it will come up as the xbox controller buttons but wont work

hmm okay the reason I asked which games is that some need you to activate the controller in the menu and some older games don't have controller support.

As for the drivers did you auto install them or did you do something like I posted if not try what I posted.

I bet you've got the 'ghost' controller issue I had.
So your controller pairs & the top left quadrant should be lit on the controller for controller 1?
When you press the Xbox guide button & the little box pops up on screen is the top left quadrant lit in the box or as an inkling is the top right one lit instead?

Honestly mate - if you asked this 6 or 7 hours ago I would have given you a solution.
This same problem happened to me yesterday - I thought I'd fixed it but its now reoccured & I'll be f****d if anything I do makes any difference.
I'm glad its not just me (not out of selfishness) because 2 heads are better than 1.
What are your components?
What OS are you using??
What other USB controllers eg. Keyboard & mouse
Did your controller work fine before??
When did this problem occur?

Trying to find if there's anything obvious between our systems
I know what the problem is but have no idea why its happening all of a sudden.
Something in the windows startup process is taking control of xinput id0 - it seems to be a ghost device as I've removed literally everything from my system that could interfere.
Ms controllers are assigned xinput id's from 0-4
Id 0 being controller number 1
Our controllers are being assigned id 1 which is controller 2 - which isn't acknowledged in the majority of games.
Even if my wireless ms receiver is unplugged something is still assigned to xinput id 0!!
What I have found is within the first 20 seconds of the desktop booting the controller is assigned correctly then it switches on its own.

Lmk the info above - hopefully it will enable me to work it out.

totally internittent problem mate, after that last post _ rebooted ,first time fine, second time the same thing happened again!!
Booted this morning (uk time) & everything is fine again!!

steps I used to get it up & running again
firstly open command prompt as administrator
start ment, type cmd in search box
right click run as administrator
in the box type sfc /scannow
let it do it stuff

when finished open control panel/devic manager
open view tab, select show hidden devices
open human interface devices
youll see a number of devices that are slightly greyed out compared to the darker ones that are actualyl being used, these are unused drivers - right click each one in turn & uninstall - if it asks if you want to delete driver select yes
I thikn controller in win 7 is called microsoft common controller??
open this tab 7 if there are any greyed out duplicates delete again.

Reboot & see what happens

Ive found the problem occurs less if you swicth the pad on as soon as the desktop appears - that may just be coincidence though.

I tried this man its not even working I thought it was for a second till I went to play a game. i pressed the xbox button and it came up as controller one turned on the game and nothing. Pressed the button again and just as fast as it came up controller 1 it went to controller 2

feel for you mate ,really
Mine is working again now & at the minute Im using windowd 8 hibernate as I have a sneaky feeling that If I cold boot it will happen again - this is really really f****n annoying now - I have tried pretty much everything.

Do you have a recentish restore point you can roll back to beore the monday this happened??
My last restore point was mid feb which would lose me too much recently installed stuff - I did go to windows update though & uninstalled the last 5 or 6 most recent installed updates - I honestly dont know if this has made a difference or not though.

Searched all over the net,no info on this at all & MS support is pretty much non existant from what Ive seen
Cannot possible be just me & you though,What do you use mouse/keyboard wise?? are they wireless by any chance?

6 reboots mate,working every time - good work mate & thankyou :D

just waiting for GeForce_GTX770 to pop up & say if it works for him or not - fingers crossed

I can only assume this has something to do with the nvidia shield drivers that are included with geforce experience - cant think of any other reson this would affect xinput assignments
