I have a backup image I made with NTI of windows 7. I lost my original win7 cd and key code. Do I have to partition the new hard drive a particular way so the image fits properly onto the new hard drive? I have no idea how this is going to work if it does at all.

As long as the image was created on the same system (ie same motherboard) that you want to restore the image to, there should be no problem.
No need to partition the new hard drive as the partition configuration is already defined in the image data. Just make sure the new hard drive is at least same capacity (or greater) as the old one.
