Hello! I decided to try and fiddle with the pc building process before investing a lot of money. Today I found a decent tower and between 2 older computers, I threw together a machine. I got through the building part fine and everything is powered on. I have a green light on my motherboard and BIOS seems to recognize everything I have connected (HDD, RAM, DVD, and USB).

I loaded ubuntu onto my lexar usb using two different programs to format and mount it to the drive. The most I get from BIOS is the "reboot and select proper boot device." Otherwise it just blinks at me. Same goes for using a DVD with the iso burned onto it. I also tried the usb method with an iso for xubuntu to no avail.

Is what I'm trying to do even possible? Here's what I'm dealing with:
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.4ghz
Motherboard: Intel d845epi/d845gvsr
HDD: hp 160gb
PSU: Rosewill 400w
Sony CD-RW

Not sure about the memory, but BIOS tells me that i've got 128kb cache, 1.5gb total memory. 512mb in bank 0 and 1024 in bank 1. My brain hurts right now :/ I wanna learn how to get past this so I'll feel more confident when dropping money on new parts to build my gaming rig. So help is greatly appreciated!

I think you must be incorrectly making your usb/dvd, no reason Ubuntu or any other linux would not boot.

On windows i like to use LiLi because it is very simple and checks md5sums... (always check md5sum and verify the dvd is burned correctly with md5sum)

Sometimes when booting the usb may be listed under hard drive instead of usb or removable derive.

alternatively be sure you are actually burning the iso correctly and not copying the iso to the dvd. imgburn is a popular tool to do this. Just be sure to use the 'burn image' option.

You were absolutely right! For whatever reason my usb must not have been formatted correctly. I was using LiLi, but I guess the computer just couldn't read it for whatever reason. I went back and looked at my post and realized part of the problem. The computer had a CD drive that I was trying to use to read the DVD I put the iso on...smh. I swapped it out for an old DVD drive and now I'm in business. I'm installing ubuntu now, thanks!
