Problems with some programs on a brand new Windows 8.1 laptop

I just bought a laptop 5 days ago. On the first day after we bought it, it was working really well. I only used it to watch youtube videos. Then a day later I installed a few programs (vlc, avast, 7zip, photoscape, picasa, utorrent). It was working fine for a while, but now it "refreshes" every few minutes after startup. The wallpaper, task bar, and all the icons in the desktop disappear for like a second and it does this quite a few times. I don't think it's normal.

Some programs can't seem to "save" settings. For example, I apply settings on 7zip nothing changes and when I open the settings menu again, the changes I made were not saved. It just resets to it's default. Also, one time one partition (not C) suddenly disappeard (not visible in my computer).

I boot scanned it with avast and it did find something and it said it's been "moved to chest" so I thought it was okay but when I tried using it again today, it happened again. Should I be worried?

The laptop is Acer Aspire E 14 and runs Windows 8.1 with Bing. Thanks you in advance for your help.

Solution
Welcome to Windows.

Recently went through the same thing. Wife got an HP laptop, I put an unused SSD I had in, and tried to install windows. Any windows. I couldn't get anything to work. Likewise it didn't come with a W8 disk, and after contacting HP, they said I'd have to buy a new copy.
After endlessly trying 7, 8 and 8.1 on DVD and USB I gave up and put the orig untouched HDD back in, and left the wife to deal with all the bloatware crap.

If you can reliably demonstrate the fault, I'd take it back to the shop.

Welcome to Windows.

A virus can be removed, but that doesn't mean the damage has been repaired.
Thanks to OSX I haven't had a virus scanner in 7 years, but in XP days, it was often a matter of re-installing windows, or sometimes even doing a zero fill, formatting and re-installing.
