Motherboard dead - CPU still ok?

A few days ago my laptop stopped working and would not turn on. I suspect that a power surge knocked it out because that's what also happened to another netbook that was plugged in.

My question is... if my motherboard died would that necessarily mean that my CPU is also dead? And is there any way to check if my CPU still works without putting it into a computer?

I was hoping to sell it to put towards buying a new laptop. And no I don't have warranty so sending it back to manufaturer is not an option (if it was even covered).

Thank you in advanced for your input.

I don't know about you, but I have an ASUS board and power surges are covered in its warranty.

Don't bother selling a broken laptop, nobody is going to buy it, there are maybe half a dozen people one the planet that have the exact same make and model on the planet that is ever present ebay or other used hardware sites, but none of them are likely to buy a broken laptop.

And even if you could sell it, there is nothing you could get out of it, maybe enough to for a round of drinks at the bar.
