It seems like the PCI Express x16 slot is broken on a new Gigabyte B85M-D3H board.

Hey guys! Going through the process of putting together this new build (all new parts). While doing so I've run into a strange issue.

Everything is in the build and plugged in. But I don't get any boot/post screen when connecting my monitor to my GPU. When I plug in the monitor to the motherboard it works just fine though. I then tried disabling internal graphics, but the only change was that it no longer showed the "Can't find a boot drive error" when plugged into the motherboard.

I then tried to do a couple of things. I've tried loosening the screws on the GPU, making sure I'm using the correct power cables for the GPU, checking to see if the GPU was properly seated, and tried to use both HDMI and DVI cables. Nothing changed.

I then tried moving the GPU to the PCI Express x4 slot. I get the post/boot screen just like normal! I've since tried putting the GPU back in the x16 but it still doesn't work.

Does this mean I've got a bad x16 slot? Or maybe is this a compatibility/BIOS update thing? What can I do to troubleshoot this more? Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

How much performance would be lost using the x4 slot with this card? Does it only matter for higher cards?

I've never had a computer part come DoA. What's the best way to go through this process? Would it be better to go through NewEgg or straight to Gigabyte?

Sounds like a dead port matey, but no point in making do with new parts and new machine, send it back and get a new board..... one failure now will lead to many others.

Enjoy the new rig once its up and running

Thanks again for all the help. One last question, is it ok to put the motherboard straight into the opened bad it came in? I've heard that once you open the bag it can then attract static electricity but I can't think of any other way to do it. Is there any procedure I need to go through?
