Is there a Xeon that comes near to an overclocked i7 5820k in terms of gaming performance?

Quite a simple question. Is there any Xeon processor that can perform as well as or beat an i7 5820k that is running a moderate overclock In gaming. I know the xeons are for workstations and servers but can you overclock one to perform as well as the i7 extreme chip in gaming?

Simple answer is no, not in gaming. The 5820k 3.3GHz/3.6, 6 core closest match in cost is the E5-2620 V3 2.0GHz/2.5-(1 or 2 cores), 2.4-(3 or 4 cores), 2.3-(5 or 6 cores).
The Xeon is locked and will not OC as the 5820k does, the base release prices were $369 for the 5820k and $410 for the 2620, so it is even more expensive. Hope that helps....

Xeon's are typically locked and are thus harder to overclock. On the other hand, it's very difficult to actually use the full power of an i7 5820k just gaming. Also, with the new DX12, it may be possible in the future to take advantage of more cores in certain gaming situations. This could give a slight edge to a 10 or 12 core cpu even with a lower clock.
Short answer is that no xeon can beat an OC'd i7 5820k for gaming. Some could match it in certain scenarios (but not without spending a lot more money).

No matter how closely a i7 or a xeon are there are more differences than the ability to over clock. Your not going to want to use the server - workstation cpu for gaming and Intel knows that.

This really is not true at all. Many Xeons are nothing more than rebadged i5s and i7s. The e5-1650v3 I mentioned earlier will outperform a stock i7 5280k at every task a cpu can do. It will perform almost identically to the i7 5930k at stock speeds. There is no significant difference about the Xeon that holds it back in any way.

All of the e3 Xeons are based of off the consumer LGA1155/1150 i5s and i7s and all perform just as well in all tasks.

we are talking about 2011-v3 CPU's here not 1155 or 1150... as stated above why would you pay more to play a game so that you wouldn't have to overclock it. However you are right that they are similar, they are not just renamed i5's or i7's In your comparison the e5-1650v3 cost $615 the i7 5820K cost $390. e5-1650v3 has all 40 PCI-e lanes and also has an accelerator for better communication between the CPU and those PCI-e lanes, the i7 only has 28 PCI-e lanes... those differences come at a price of $225. So your right about the e5 being better.

The e5-1650 is a re-badged i7 5930k not 5820k. The price difference between the 1650v3 and 5930k is ~$20
