Can I replace my VRAM thermal compound?

Hi guys,

In the attached photo, where the grey slabs of thermal compound are hanging out on the GPU VRAM, my card has a white compound with a thin sheet of fibers inlaid. I've never seen cloth purposefully used in thermal compound. Can I just pull all of this stuff off and replace it with some Cooler Master compound I have on hand?

Two more questions for you.

1. Is it necessary for me to replace these thermal pads now that I've taken the card apart? Or is it ok for me to leave them on even though they are "damaged" at this point?

2. If I put thermal past on and it doesn't come in contact with the designated spots on the card, will it hurt anything?
