Randomly and just before my pc turns off in the logging off screen I hear a shKK sound, its not too loud but I think it might be the power supply considering it makes the sound when i turn off my pc. Is this sound indicative of something?

Solution

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Ship it back and tell them to fix it.. Not acceptable that this happens.

My psu is a corsair Cx750. And sorry for the vague explanation of a sound, its more of a variation of a click, it happens every time i turn off my pc, always has, not a big problem really, but it also does it randomly even when im on the desktop, my hard drives are always running even when not used, so im not too sure.

well, your hard drives won't be running when you turn off the machine, so it might be them. if you can, take the side cover off the machine, and put your fingers on the drive and power supply, and try to feel what is making the tick when you power down.

Yes definitely try this. Might now work so well for the PSU because it is a lot bigger, therefore the energy from the click will be dispersed better. But it is definitely worth a shot.

How? this is the one i have now and it has this problem, loads of people have reported this and loads of people know that corsair make terrible psu's. I only have this one because i bought this one custom made nearly 2 years ago.

Wait what do you mean how?

it may be a batch or random case. i have two CX-M supplies and both are great - silent, stable, etc. both are running 24/7 though not at full load. i've had an antec which blew within a week and the replacement has been fine for 7 years, half of that time being run 24/7. i've also had an apevia "comes with chassis" psu that was iffy at first, got replaced under warranty, and replacement has been fine for just as long.

CX might not be "leet haxor gamer approved" but they're not necessarily "all garbage"

Why pay $90 for a PSU which isn't as good as one that is $80 and better quality?

$90: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/01/21/corsair_cx750_750w_power_supply_review/9#.VP0OH-FNNQI

$80: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=393

Hence the name garbage.

Warranty doesn't cover changing parts, I wouldn't know where to start anyway.

if this was a pre-built or custom-built, then yeah taking it back would be the best place to start. at the very least, they'd replace the power supply with a same unit. if they're cool, they'll do it on the spot rather than hold your machine hostage for N weeks while sending just the power supply back to corsair.

optionally, ask them if they can "upgrade" you to another brand/model for a small charge.

They collect the PC and deliver it back 3-5 days later which is quite good. Hopefully they get me a better PSU, they would probably test it before sending it back to me anyway. Because its 3-5 days they probably already have parts there. The business is called chillblast and they are probably 150 miles away from me.

Does it happen when you are playing non-intensive games?

No. The recorded sound at random intervals, but the sound seems to be coil whine mixed with a bad PSU, even though its under 100fps, such as cs go.
