Hi!

I have just installed my new msi motherboard and when i started up windows (no new installation) I saw that my D: and E: drive had no size on them.

When I clicked them they said: the drive has to be formatted before use.

The problem was that I didn't setup the raid on the new motherboard yet, but when i do so via the BIOS menu I cant get the pc to boot (ROM/UEFI).

How do I re-enable RAID without all my data on the hdd being lost?

You can do software RAID through Windows Disk Management, but otherwise if you wanted to use the RAID from your motherboard you are going to have to reinstall Windows in order to enable RAID mode on the motherboard.

1. switch motherboard to RAID mode
2. install Windows on your boot drive (doesn't have to be RAID drive)
3. set up your RAID volume

Do you use the different model MB? If yes, the new MB will not recognize the old RAID (D+E drive). If you want keep the data, you need use the old MB or new same model MB, transfer and save the data first, otherwise nothing you can do.

When you set up a raid array, it is governed by the type of Sata or Raid chip set of each mother board.
If you take a raid array out of one system where the board uses a different chip set this will happen.

Your problem is also that due to a change in the chip set from board to board windows will not run right anyway.
More than likely crash, The raid settings are stored on the boot sector for windows for the raid array.

Your best off putting the hard drives back to the old board.
Get two new hard drives and set up a new raid array with the new board, and installing a fresh copy of windows.

Then clone what parts if you can of all the data on the old Raid array you had setup on the old board.
You should be able to given the right bit of software, then send the cloned image and write it to your new array via linking both systems over Ethernet, or your home network.
If you find you have two options or sata chip sets as part of your new board, take a look at your old Raid setup and what chip set it used, options are Intel, Amd, or ASmedia. you must if you find its the same set the raid array up to the right set of Sata ports that either chip set will use. and if your lucky you may not have to tamper, or be forced to wipe your drives to create a fresh raid array.

To create or setup a new raid array the option of F10 or another function key is pressed after first post an extended option for formatting, type of raid, and raid mode, Striped ect.

If you are dead set on having a RAID volume, you will have to reinstall Windows. Otherwise, you could simply use it as a spanned volume if you wish; it'll appear identical in practice to having a RAID 0, just will not be striped.

if you were to reinstall Windows:
1. change motherboard to RAID mode in BIOS
2. insert install media, install OS
3. reboot and set up RAID volume (should appear before Windows boots) - consult your motherboard manual for specific instructions on how to do this, but RAID mode must be enabled first

We need to clear up something.
1) What are those MB? Can you post their spec?
2) You have one HDD with two partitions and other HDD has the OS in, right?
3) Because you don't have the DVD/CD drive, so you use the old HDD w the OS in it try to boot up the new PC, right? And do you connect only one HDD or two HDD?

You just connect the 76GB drive to boot the PC, don't set the RADI mode in the BIOS yet. Can you boot ? And you don't tell me what is old or the new MB model yet, because if they are different MB, amd or intel, you may not boot the PC up

And what version is the Windows? XP, 7 or 8.1? And you have the data in other either 2X 500GB or 2X1TB, and they are in the RAID mode in the old system, and you want to save those data, right?

Without raid set in the bios i can boot, but i cant use the D: and E: drive, which were raid, without formatting.

I can use the C: drive and I am using Windows 7 Proffesional.

I went from a Tyan Dual-CPU Server motherboard to a MSI AMD3+ motherboard.

You can't use that RAID anymore, because you change the MB, then the old RAID (D+E drive) will not be recognized by the new MB, you have to format and reset the new RAID in the new MB. So if you want to save the data on that RAID, you have to put them back to the old Server PC to recover the data first.

The way you want to set the new PC, all you do:
1) Put the old RAID (D+E) back to the Tyan Dual-CPU Server, save the data to other HDD.
2) Use the 76GB w/OS to boot the new PC, update the all the drivers, like AMD chipset driver http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows+8.1+-+64 and the windows update, if you want to use AMD RAID then install the RAID driver too, if you use Microsoft RAID you do nothing.
3) Check the link for how to change the RAID mode from AHCI mode w/o reinstall the windows ( under the Windows 7 section) http://www.overclock.net/t/1227636/how-to-change-sata-modes-after-windows-installation
4) After that, set up the raid, and you will be able use the new raid. Then you can put back the data in it if you want.
