I've stuck away from BDRs because they were too expensive and because of the reported 7yr lifespan when they first came out. But has this lifespan problem materialised or are they no different to DVD+-R discs?

Also more importantly, which are the most reliable BDR discs?

Sorry read it as wich drive. not what disks.

First off disks degrade with UV light exposure and heat, the denser the data the faster the degradation. So say if you left your disks dark, dry and cold theyd prolly last a wery long time. 7 years is more of a guesstimate from disks that are actually used and prolly stored in regular casettes on your desk with a bit og UV from the window etc.

But what on earth would you like to store for 7 years in the first place?
If its family photos etc id suggest redundant HDD's. IE duplicate disks on a computer plus a physically seperate external drive or disconnected HDD.

I updated the title to make it clearer. When I'm burning a film I'm pretty much doing it for posterity. There are plenty of films and tv shows I've come back to even on DVD where the disc no longer works and I've had to burn it again. I don't want to start using BRRs and find that the problem is even worse.

I dont currently have a good idea of how to store that much data for well "ever". But i dont think any kind of disc (laser read kind) Will last all that long.
Actually, other than HDD's redundantly copying themselves, i think present time completely lacks long time storage for large files. Atleast within consumer pricerange.

I read some articles dating to 2012 and they said the same, -> Verbatim media. I just wanted to see if anything had changed since 2012 when the articles were written.

The other issue I have had more recently with DVD+-R is that wherever you buy them from you end up with fakes. They say Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim etc but definitely are not.

I still doubt that any halfway decent store in the western world would sell fake brand name discs by choice.
Probably at some "going out of buisness" electronics store you could find fake or even non functioning discs, but if its that important to you, you probably would go to a more trustworthy store.
