Is there a real disadvantage trying to game on Ubuntu compared to windows 7?

Apparently linux is more safe and faster then win 7 but for playing games there seem to be issues trying to run older & certain AAA games.

ya use windows -- you can game on Linux but its trying to do so and the end results may not please you go to wine hq and look things up and be ready to hack at the terminal to do what a simple install on windows would be

if the game don't have its own Linux client your here .....

This appears to be a misconception most people have who do not use Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro. I use Ubuntu regularly for productivity and whilst you can use the terminal for pretty much everything, and a lot of the time using the terminal simplifies these tasks, the GUI is just as capable as Windows. You can also install Steam on Linux and there are quite a lot of games that run on Linux natively (the number of games is also rising rapidly with the release of Linux-based Steam OS). Check out this link for a list of Linux games on Steam.

However, overall I would still say gaming is best on Windows 7 (and 8) for the time being as you have the guarantee that if a game is coming out on PC it will be available on the Windows platform and as this video shows games perform better on average on Windows (due to more consistent driver updates).

using the terminal simplifies these tasks,????

simpler then insert disk - click install click play ??? get real dude and then fopr the most part it need to run on open gl and ya I got games on Linux mostly iD stuf type stuff .. I never said you could not but your not getting what you will in windows .. by far

Assuming you know what you are doing or willing to learn how to use it, then yes. Also, Steam works the exact same way on Ubuntu as it does on Windows, I don't know what you mean by "need to run on open gl" but it is simply not true.

what Linux supports direct x ???? with out a emulator ?

what he needs to do is =get a cheap hard drive and get a copy of what ever Linux on it and see for his self .. its all free and anyone who can read and comprehend steams eula and still installs it on his hard drives is kinda foolish in my book --

just get a copy of Linux and go into iit and see that's all you need to do and learn whats what
