I'm looking into building my first PC Build but undecided about what GPU to use for a 1080p wide screen 60hz monitor.

I was Interested in the gtx 970 but put off with the 3.5 GB vram issue and only intresed in the Asus dragon knight which will only release in China and not even out yet.

While with the r9 290x Vapor x I know runs hotter and consumes more energy but looks so much better and not that more expensive

Also considing waiting for the R9 300 series.

Solution
The GTX 970 is a fully capable DirectX 12 card. The 290X is only DirectX 12 compatible, which makes it already just a few months from being obsolete.

"...only GM2xx GPUs will fully support the newer rendering features like Conservative Rasters and Raster Ordered Views. Developers can access such features through the DirectX 11 API, hence the support for DX12 in Fermi and above, but as we understand it native support for them and therefore, presumably, better performance when using them will only be available in the latest GPUs, such as GM204."

R9 290x and gtx 970 trades blow in performance. 970 requires less power and release less heat. Don't worry about the 3.5 vram issue, it becomes more of a factor if you go above 1080p. It all depends which games you play, nvidia or amd games so whchever you can get cheaper go for it.

note:
if you go for r9 290x, make sure psu is enough and case must have good airflow

i have 2 R290s and 2 GTX 970s and for some reason BF4 it runs alot smoother on my GTX970s on ultra at 4k for some reason build.Even with mantle i still have a bit of lag on the game might be a bottle neck somewhere on my 290s but i know the 290s get hot as hell then my 970s. AMD 8350, 16 gigs of ram with a Corsair 540 case like 4 harddrives 1 ssd just for windows.
