Memory issues after upgrade

I recently upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad T530 memory from 4GB to 8GB. There are two memory slots, one previously filled with a 4GB stick. I opted to buy a 8GB (2x4) pack, but on replacing the existing stick, Windows, Linux, and Memtest all show 6GB available. However, the BIOS shows all 8GB.

Confused, I removed the new memory and replaced it with the original 4GB stick. Now, it appears as 2GB in the same slot it was in before the upgrade. It shows as 4GB when placed in the other slot. Now whatever combination I try, one slot shows 4GB and the other 2GB, resulting in a maximum of 6GB.

Through my testing I have tried to narrow down the possibilities and it seems to me to be a motherboard issue. I just don't know what I could have possibly done while swapping the memory to cause this issue. My laptop is no longer under warranty and I wanted to see if anyone had any wisdom that could help me out here.

Thanks in advance.

Under the 'Config' tab there is: Network, USB, Keyboard/Mouse, Display, Power, Beep and Alarm, SATA, CPU. The only option under 'Display' is setting the default startup display.
