What happens with 2gb ram in a 1gb ram slot

I want to upgrade my RAM with 1 gb. I have 2 slots, one with 2 gb and one with 1 gb. On 1 slot is a note that says: maximum 1G. What happens if i put a 2gb stick in there? Is it safe to do or will my laptop get ''overloaded''

If it says max 1 GB, than I would follow the directions. In all likelihood, the laptop will not work as the motherboard cannot work will not be able to work with that much RAM. I doubt it would be permanent damage, and the laptop would work again when the RAM was removed.
