Ok. So I have spent the last three days trying to get a system I put together to work right and it just refuses to and I have gotten to my wits end. The system is constantly freezing forcing a manual restart and the issues has only been getting worse. I have done everything I can think of. I have changed the hard drive, reloaded windows multiple time even changed the gpu and still can't get it to work right. It's freezing so bad an so quickly now on the two most recent attempt to reload/reset windows 8 it locked up before the process could even finish. I am starting to think it's either the motherboard or the PSU. Both of which are non negotiable for the way I planned the build. But here is hoping maybe you guys have some other ideas. Here is the full parts list.

Athlon x4 860k
Asrock A88X-ITX+
XFX R9 285
Silverstone NT-06 cup cooler
Crucial Ballistix 1600 RAM 8 gb
Seagate 1 tb HDD
Silverstone 450w SFX psu
SUGO SG05 case (power supply came with the case)

I know that this rig really pushes the limits on the psu but the research I did seemed to show that at least in theory it should have been up to the job. Maybe I didn't research hard enough. This is also my first time building a computer which isn't helping.

Could be faulty memory stick. Try to replace with a known working stick. I would think the PSU should be OK at least to get into Windows. Something to rule out before investing

If you can get into Windows, see if you can find any crash logs that might explain what's going on.

Better suggestion for memory would be to use one stick at a time.

I thought he has only one 8GB stick. If he has 2X4GB, then yes.

Not true at all. A PSU is most likely to fail either A. Right away or B. When the load begins to increase. Booting to Windows doesn't take much power at all, so it isn't that much of a test. You can check to see if the fans are working by using the paper click method:

Well at one point I had prime95 and furmark running at the same time. I kept that going for over 30min. I feel like having both the CPU and GPU at 100% for that long would have cause the PSU to fail if it was going to. I have ordered new memory to see if that will solve the issue.

What error are you getting? Go into windows event logs and tell me the error. It sounds like it's kernel event power 41. But right off the bat I can tell you it's because the psu does not have enough wattage. You need a much higher wattage than that for that gpu.

If the error you are getting is kernel event 41 then that confirms it.

GPU only requires a 500W PSU. And wattage doesn't matter.. The amps on the 12v rail does. That PSU has 36A on the 12v which is way more than enough. I still think it is the PSU though.

In the op it states he only has a 450 watt psu. Hence me saying it's not enough lol

Enough for the GPU? No.. You can't tell if a PSU is powerful enough for a GPU by looking at the watts. It doesn't work like that.

Not trying to argue here. Just waiting on him to tell the error he's getting. If it's kernel event power 41 then I'm just saying it's either psu is not powerful enough. Which is what I think it isn't or the psu is faulty.

Right now the only option I see from reading this thread, is that the op has ordered new ram. Just trying to give a different perspective.

Having owned many amd cards, they are much more power hungry. So it could very well be the psu.

So, I did go look at the system event log and sure enough there are 23 kernel power 41 events. Looks like it is the power supply. I am going to go ahead and order a new one. probably the Silverstone 600w SFX just in case the PSU wattage does have something to do with the issue. I will probably still tinker with the memory a bit. But at this point don't really have any reason to believe that's the issue.

yeah that's what I figured. New power supply should solve those problems. Let us know how it goes.

Wtf.. Wait so you changed the HDD, the PSU, memory, GPU and reinstalled windows...................................?

Really really weird. Just out of curiosity, clear the CMOS, after that I would have to say it is the motherboard. Super small chance it is the 860k.
