Why is CPU suddenly running so hot?

So I have a AMD fx 8310 processor and have had no problems with it until about a day ago when my computer started completely freezing randomly. I was confused what was causing the problem until I noticed with my core temperature program that my cpu was running extremely hot (70~) when doing simple things like watching netflix, a full 30 or so degrees hotter than it usually runs. I opened the case and as far as I can tell all fans including the heatsink are still running, the case itself is a bit cramped but like I said everything was perfect until a few days ago. What could've caused this?

I can try this, although I was hesitant because I just got this cpu about 3 months ago and applied new thermal paste at this time. Knowing how new it is do you think this could still be the issue?

A sudden surge (in CPU temp) like you mentioned is usually due to a CPU cooler fan failure. The thermal paste isn't going to produce a sudden loss of cooling like a fan would. The mounting screws of the cooler itself is an additional possibility.

A dirty heat sink is another possibility but again not a sudden onset

Just unseated the cpu, cleaned it, applied new thermal paste and replaced the heatsink very carefully, temp is now running around 50 with netflix which is much more normal. Its possible it was the paste I used last time (cooler master brand) in the past I had used antec silver and returned to it now. Anyways thank you both for the help, problem is soved
